Origin
The Punica granatum, also known as the pomegranate tree, originally stems from the area of modern Iran to Northern India. Over the centuries, however, the tree has spread all over the world, from the Mediterranean region to Southeast Asia. The cultural significance of the pomegranate tree, ubiquitous in the art and mythology of antiquity, reflects its long history of domestication.

Characteristics
The Punica granatum is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can typically reach 6 to 7 metres in height. The leaves of the pomegranate tree are opposite or in whorls of three to six at the ends of the branches, narrow and lance-shaped. The flowers are conspicuous, bearing bright, carmine-red petals. The fruit, the pomegranate, is a berry, around 5-12 cm in diameter with a round shape and thick, red skin.

Care
For optimal growth, the Punica granatum requires a sunny, warm and well-drained location. It has a moderate water requirement and survives on rainwater, unless there is extreme drought. In addition, the plant is fairly drought-resistant and can cope well with various soil types, from clay soil to sandy loam. With its robust root system, the pomegranate can survive in the long term under adverse conditions.
