Origin
The Cereus peruvianus 'Monstrosus', also known as the Peruvian apple cactus, originates from South America. This type of cactus naturally grows in the higher Andes mountains of Peru. However, the plant has been able to spread throughout the continent and is now cultivated in many places.
Characteristics
The 'Monstrosus' variant of the Cereus peruvianus is a special cactus due to its distinctive yellow needles. These needles not only have a striking colour, but also have a rare growth pattern. The cactus has a unique growth method in which a single upright trunk does not dominate, but instead it spreads in multiple, irregular twisting forms. The flowers of the Cereus peruvianus are nocturnal bloomers, usually cream to white in colour.
Care
Like many cacti, the Cereus peruvianus 'Monstrosus' requires a relatively simple care routine. The plant needs good drainage and does not like damp soil, so watering should be sparing, even less in winter. Place the cactus in a well-lit area, preferably with a lot of direct sunlight. As this plant originally comes from high mountains, it can handle relatively low temperatures, but protection from frost is necessary.
