Origin
The Veitchia (Adonidia) merrillii, also known as the Christmas Palm, has its origin in the Philippines. Specifically, this palm species grows on the Palawan and Danjugan islands. Through human intervention, the plant can now also be found in other parts of the world such as the Caribbean and Hawaii.
Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii stands out for its slender trunk and elegant fronds which are dark green and have a feathered shape. This palm species remains relatively small, compared to other palms, with a maximum height of around 6 to 7 meters. The plant produces bright red fruits, which led to its nickname Christmas Palm. These fruits are produced from small white flowers the plant bears during the summer.
Care
In terms of care, the Veitchia merrillii requires relatively little attention. The plant prefers well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight, but can also survive in a shady garden. It's important to ensure that the plant doesn't stand in stagnant water. Regarding temperature, the Veitchia merrillii can grow year-round in a warm environment, but cannot withstand frost. When fertilising, it's recommended to use a fertiliser specifically for palm trees, as these generally provide the nutrients that this species needs.
