Origin
Dioon edule, also known as the Chestnut Dioon, is a type of cycad native to Mexico. It is most commonly found in calcareous, dry forests and on the rocky terrain of the Sierra Madre Oriental.
Characteristics
The Dioon edule is a palm-like plant characterised by its slow-growing, sturdy trunk and fern-like leaves. The plant can reach a height of up to 10 metres and the leaves can have a length of up to 1.5 metres. The plant also distinguishes itself by its female cones that, when they mature, reveal beautiful bright orange seeds.
Care
Regarding care, the Dioon edule has few demands, making it an excellent candidate for planting in gardens. It prefers bright indirect light and well-drained soil to prevent root rot. It is also important to ensure that the plant is not overwatered, as it is highly drought-resistant. When planting in colder climates, it is recommended to protect the plant from severe frost.
