Origin
The Lophocereus schottii 'Monstruosa', also known as the Totem Pole Cactus, originates from the desert regions of Mexico, particularly in Baja California and Sonora. This cactus has survived the extreme weather and dry conditions of this region for thousands of years.

Characteristics
The Lophocereus schottii 'Monstruosa' is characterised by its striking growth habit. As the name suggests, this cactus grows in the form of a 'totem pole', with the stems growing vertically upwards and usually displaying a smooth, bumpy surface without spikes. The colour of the stems varies from dark green to nearly grey, giving the plant an even more noticeable appearance. The plant seldom flowers but produces white flowers when it does.

Care
The care of the Lophocereus schottii 'Monstruosa' requires little effort due to its adaptability to arid conditions. The plant has a strong preference for full sunlight but can also survive in partial shade. It is important that the cactus is planted in well-draining soil, as it does not respond well to static water and can quickly suffer from root rot. In harsh winters, the cactus needs protection against frost, as it is not frost-resistant.
