Origin
The Aloe marlothii, also known as the Mountain Aloe, originates from South Africa, specifically in the provinces of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal, where it thrives on rocky slopes and grasslands. Here, the species has adapted itself to a variety of climate types, ranging from warm, dry regions to cooler, precipitation-rich areas.

Characteristics
What sets the Aloe marlothii apart are its impressive size and unique physical characteristics. The Aloe marlothii can grow to a height of 3 to 6 meters and has multiple branched stems that each bear a rosette of elongated, fleshy leaves. The leaves are grey to blue-green in colour and are adorned with brown spines. Furthermore, the plant is characterised by its striking orange-red flowers, which appear in the winter months and attract a large number of birds and insects.

Care
In terms of care, the Aloe marlothii is a relatively uncomplicated plant. It thrives in sunlight and tolerates dry conditions well, making it ideally suited for water-conserving gardens. Once the plant has established itself, it requires little water. Well-draining soil is crucial to prevent water from remaining around the roots, which can lead to root rot. Although the plant can withstand some frost, a minimum winter temperature of -2°C is recommended. Furthermore, the plant requires little fertilisation and should be repotted every 3 to 5 years.
