Opuntia consulea
F00001740
Origin
The Opuntia basilaris, also known as the Beavertail Cactus, is a cactus species originally from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This plant can grow in various types of environments but has a preference for desert areas and rocky slopes.
Characteristics
The Opuntia basilaris is a low-growing and wide-spreading cactus. The plant consists of large, flattened disc-shaped segments reminiscent of a beaver tail, hence the nickname. In addition, the plant develops lively pink or purple flowers in the spring. The thorns of this cactus are small and significantly less prominent than many other cacti.
Care
When maintaining the Opuntia basilaris, it is important to take into account its preference for dry, sandy soils and bright sunshine. The plant has a high tolerance for drought and requires very little water. However, excessive water or poor draining soil can lead to rot, especially during the winter months. Hardiness varies, but generally, the Opuntia basilaris can withstand temperatures up to around -9 degrees Celsius.
