Origin
The Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' (160-180), often simply referred to as 'Texanum', is a species of Ligustrum originally from Japan. This plant was introduced to the United States in the 19th century, where it particularly thrived in the warmer climate of the southwestern part of the country, such as Texas.
Characteristics
The 'Texanum' is an evergreen shrub that can grow between 160 and 180 centimeters tall. The shiny, dark green leaves are oval in shape and often up to ten centimeters long. The plant produces clusters of small, strongly scented white flowers in late spring and early summer. In the fall, the 'Texanum' bears small, black berries.
Care
Regardless of its origin, the Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' is a very resistant plant that grows well in almost all soil types and in both shaded and sunny locations. The plant needs regular pruning to maintain its dense, compact shape. Although the 'Texanum' tolerates drought, regular watering promotes optimal growth. Moreover, the plant is usually free from diseases and pests.
