Origin
The Yucca rigida, also known as the blue yucca, is a plant species indigenous to the desert regions of northern Mexico. This includes areas such as Sonora, Chihuahua and Coahuila. This plant is part of the Asparagaceae family, which is known for its rich variety of succulents.
Characteristics
The Yucca rigida is known for its distinctive stiff, blue-grey leaves that end in a sharp point. The plant can reach a height of up to 5 meters and develops a trunk in its older age. This species is also much loved for its impressive flowering habit; in spring, the plant develops a tall flower stalk with white, bell-shaped flowers.
Care
The Yucca rigida is easy to care for. The plant prefers a location with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Due to its origin in dry desert areas, the plant is very drought tolerant. Watering is therefore only sparingly necessary; almost not at all in the winter months. The plant is hardy, but may need protection in extremely low temperatures.
