Origin
The Bulnesia arborea is a plant species originally from the northern part of South America. Its natural distribution includes mainly the dryer areas of Colombia, Venezuela, Bonaire, Curaçao, Aruba and parts of the Caribbean. The plant has been used for centuries in these regions because of the wood and essential oil that can be extracted from the tree.
Characteristics
The Bulnesia arborea, also known as 'verawood', is an evergreen tree that, under optimal conditions, can grow up to 20 metres high. The leaves have a reddish tint when they emerge, but later turn a dark green. The small yellow flowers form dense clusters, making the tree particularly noticeable during the flowering period. The wood of the tree is hard, heavy and durable, and has a striking green colour.
Care
A Bulnesia arborea grows best in full sun and in well-draining soil. As the tree originates from dry areas, it has a good drought tolerance and can survive long periods without water. The tree is fairly frost-resistant, but young specimens can sustain damage at temperatures below freezing point. It is best for this tree to be planted in an area with a warm, temperate climate. Despite this tree not requiring much, regular pruning and sufficient feeding supplements are necessary to keep the tree healthy and maintain a good shape.
