Podocarpus macrophyllus (70-90)
Product number : 4POMASS97Origin
The Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as the Japanese yew, originates from Japan and Southern China. This species predominantly grows in mountainous areas, forest valleys, and along riverbanks. Over the years, this plant has been introduced in many other parts of the world, including Europe and North America where it has become a popular and much-appreciated ornamental plant.
Characteristics
The Podocarpus macrophyllus is characterised by its slender and upright growth form. It is an evergreen plant that can reach a height of 20 metres, although it usually remains smaller when cultivated. The leaves of the plant are thick, leathery, dark green in colour and are between 6 to 12 centimetres long. In the late spring, the plant produces yellow-green inflorescences and in the autumn, purple-blue, olive-shaped berries appear.
Care
The Podocarpus macrophyllus is easy to care for and can grow both in full sun and semi-shade, as long as it is protected from harsh winds. It prefers well-draining, nutrient-rich and somewhat acidic soil. Watering should be regular, but need not be plentiful; the soil can dry out slightly between watering. Finally, the plant can be pruned in the spring to limit its shape and size according to preference.
