Origin
The Melocactus matanzanus, or the Turk's Head Cactus, has its origin in the Caribbean area, particularly in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. It can be found in limestone-rich soils here. The Melocactus species is known for its long-lasting and gradual growth process.
Characteristics
Melocactus matanzanus is a succulent type, meaning it stores water in its sturdy trunk and fleshy, prickly leaves. This characteristic makes it particularly resistant to drought. The cactus bears pink fruits and blooms with red to pink flowers. The cactus is marked by the striking cephalium, a fluffy growth on top of the cactus, from which the flowers and fruits emerge.
Care
In terms of care, Melocactus matanzanus requires plenty of sunlight and warmth, similar to its original tropical habitat. Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot, which is why it fares better in sandy and gravel-rich soil. Although it is tolerant of drought, regular watering is recommended in the growing seasons (spring and summer). Overwintering should take place at a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
