Origin
The Calathea mix is originally from the tropical areas of South America, particularly Brazil and nearby regions. It is a member of the Marantaceae family, also known as the arrowroot family.
Characteristics
The Calathea mix is particularly notable for its striking and colourful leaves, which often have varied patterns and different colour schemes. A unique characteristic of this plant is that it 'folds up' its leaves at night, a behaviour often described as the plant 'sleeping'. The Calathea mix can reach a height of about 50 centimetres and has leaves of about 20 centimetres.
Care
The Calathea mix prefers a moist, well-drained soil and a location with indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause the colours of the leaves to fade. The plant also has a higher need for humidity than many other houseplants, so one should water regularly at a moderate pace to prevent the roots from rotting. The Calathea mix can be fed with normal houseplant food, but only once a month during the growing period.
