Origin
The Verbena bonariensis Violet Blue, also known as Purpletop vervain, is originally a subtropical plant from South America. It specifically comes from the regions of Argentina and Brazil. In its natural habitat, this plant grows on moist, well-drained soil by rivers, grasslands and forest edges.

Characteristics
The Verbena bonariensis Violet Blue is a herbaceous perennial with an ascending growth. The plant is recognisable by its tall, upright stems and small, intense purple flowers that bloom from July to October. The Verbena bonariensis reaches a height of up to 2 metres and has opposite leaves that are broadly lanceolate or oval. These leaves are rough and hairy. The fragrance of the plant is quite strong and attractive to insects such as butterflies.

Care
Despite its subtropical origin, the Verbena bonariensis Violet Blue is reasonably hardy and can survive in temperate climates provided the soil is well-drained. The plant prefers a sunny location and requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. However, excess water should be avoided to prevent root rot. Pruning after flowering promotes new growth and helps the plant stay healthy and vital. If the plant becomes invasive, the growth can be limited by removing the seedlings.
