Origin
The Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus', often referred to as Maiden Grass, is an ornamental grass originally from East Asia. This plant species is mainly found in Japan, China and Korea. It is one of the many cultivars of the Miscanthus sinensis, which can grow and bloom in various climate zones.
Characteristics
The Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' is characterised by its height, which can vary from 150 to 200 centimetres. The ornamental grass grows bushy and produces conspicuous, plume-like flowers from late summer to autumn. The leaves are narrow and green with a silvery-grey midrib. In autumn, the leaf colour changes to a striking golden-yellow or copper-red hue.
Care
Caring for the Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' requires little maintenance. This plant species thrives well in full sun or partial shade and prefers a moist, well-draining soil. Pruning is generally not necessary, unless the plant becomes too large. In the spring, the plant can be cut back to just above the ground to stimulate new growth. It is advisable to protect this species from severe frost, especially in the first years after planting.
