Origin
The Peperomia caperata 'Santiago', also known as the Velvet Peperomia, hails from South America, particularly Brazil. In the tropics, this species is noted for growing in rock crevices and on tree trunks, where it functions as an epiphyte. Nowadays, the plant is grown and admired by houseplant enthusiasts globally for its unique and attractive appearance.

Characteristics
The Peperomia caperata 'Santiago' can be recognised by its heart-shaped, rippled leaves that exhibit a deep dark green shade. Thanks to fine hairs on the leaf surface, the leaves have a velvet-like texture. The plant sports a compact growth form and rarely grows taller than 20 cm. The underside of the leaves are often red in colour. In the summer, thin, tower-like flower spikes might emerge.

Care
Optimal care for the Peperomia caperata 'Santiago' includes a moderately lit environment, and shielding it from direct sunlight. The plant favours a warm environment with temperatures that do not fall below 15 degrees Celsius. Like many epiphytes, this plant prefers well-draining potting soil and it is crucial to avoid waterlogging. It is advisable to let the soil dry out slightly between watering, to prevent the roots from drowning. The plant also has a moderate need for water supply during its growing period. This plant is generally easy to take care of, provided that the above conditions are respected. The Velvet Peperomia is also an excellent air purifier and can thereby contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
