Origin
The Pinus mugo pumilio, better known as the dwarf mountain pine, has its origin in the mountainous areas of Central and South Europe. It's a naturally occurring conifer in the Alpine region. This plant thrives best in cool, well-drained environments.
Characteristics
The Pinus mugo pumilio is a compact growing dwarf conifer. The characteristics of this plant include dark green, needle-like leaves that grow closely together. Further, this plant produces small pine cones that adhere to the plant from summer until winter. The Pinus mugo pumilio has slow growth, making it ideal for smaller gardens and patios.
Care
Despite its compactness, the Pinus mugo pumilio can reach up to three metres high if it's not pruned. To keep the plant compact, it needs to be pruned annually. This is best done in early spring, before new shoots begin to grow. The Pinus mugo pumilio is not tolerant of drought and therefore needs regular watering, particularly during dry periods. This plant is frost hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius.
