Origin
The Euphorbia balsamifera, also known as balsam spurge, originates from the Canary Islands and the western Mediterranean region. This plant is predominantly found in semi-desert-like areas and at altitudes up to 800 metres. It is also indigenous to Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and South Asia.
Characteristics
Euphorbia balsamifera is a perennial plant that can grow up to three metres tall. This species is characterised by its grey-green, thick leaves and its milky sap. The small, yellow flowers are situated on top of the branches and bloom in early spring. The plant has a strong and spread out main root, as well as extensive lateral roots.
Care
When caring for the Euphorbia balsamifera, some caution is required. The plant needs a lot of light and warmth, hence a sunny, protected spot is ideal. In the winter, however, the plant needs to be protected against severe frost. Furthermore, this plant requires a well-draining soil and one should use water sparingly as too much water can cause root rot.
