Trachycarpus fortunei (190-230)
Stem (60-80)

Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, originates from the Himalayan Mountains. In these mountainous regions of China and North India, the plant has managed to adapt to various climatic conditions. This palm is therefore considered one of the hardiest palms in the world. It was brought to the West in the first half of the nineteenth century and since then it has made its way into gardens and parks all over the world.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a palm that can grow up to 12 metres high in the wild and is characterised by its fan-shaped leaves. The trunk of the plant is covered with fibres that turn brown and wooden-like over time. The leaves, which have a dark green colour, can reach a diameter of almost 1 meter. The palm produces small, sweet-scented flowers in clusters that later turn into blue-black fruits.
Care
Regarding the care of the Trachycarpus fortunei, there is some flexibility. The plant thrives in full sunlight as well as in partially shaded locations, but prefers well-drained soil. The palm needs to be watered regularly, especially in the summer months, but stagnant water should be avoided to prevent root rot. An annual adding of organic fertilisers during the growing season helps with the overall health and growth of the palm. Like all palms, the Trachycarpus fortunei loses old leaves which ideally should be pruned to maintain the overall shape of the palm.
