Origin
Acer palmatum 'Yezo nishiki' is a Japanese maple originally from Japan. This cultivar belongs to the family Sapindaceae. Its natural distribution area mainly includes the temperate climate zones of East Asia. The plant is primarily cultivated for its ornamental value in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
Acer palmatum 'Yezo nishiki' is a medium-sized shrub or small tree. The leaves are deeply divided with five to seven lobes and exhibit a striking, dark green colour in spring and summer. In autumn, the foliage turns an intense red to orange-red. The bark of the young branches is often smooth and light grey in colour. Its growth habit is broad and upright with dense branching.
Care
Acer palmatum 'Yezo nishiki' grows best in moist, well-draining soil. A position in partial to light shade is suitable. The plant is reasonably hardy and tolerates moderate frost. Dry winds and intense midday sun can cause damage to the foliage. Regular pruning is not necessary, but dead or crossing branches may be removed.
