Origin
The Anthurium andraeanum 'Sierra' is a plant that originally hails from South and Central America. The species can mainly be found in the tropical rainforests of Colombia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. The plant was first scientifically described in the nineteenth century by botanist Édouard André.
Characteristics
The 'Sierra' stands out with its bright, dark green leaves and striking red flowers, which, as with other Anthurium species, consist of a spathe and a spadix. The spathe, often mistaken for the flower, is glossy and heart-shaped. The spadix contains the plant's actual minute flowers. A typical characteristic of the 'Sierra', and common for Anthuriums, is the almost leather-like texture of the spathe.
Care
As for the care of the Anthurium andraeanum 'Sierra', this plant enjoys a warm and moist environment, comparable to its natural, tropical habitat. The 'Sierra' prefers indirect light and cannot handle direct sunlight well. In terms of watering, it is important to keep the soil lightly moist without the plant standing in water with its roots. It is advisable to feed the plant once a month with a nutrient solution specifically for flowering plants.
