Origin
The Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady', commonly referred to as 'Shady Lady', originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America. This plant species is native in particular to the Bahamas, Cuba and Florida. It usually functions as a tree in its local ecosystems, where it thrives excellently in coastal regions and marshlands.

Characteristics
The 'Shady Lady' is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of up to twenty metres. Its leaves are shiny, dark green in colour and have an oval to lanceolate shape. The tree produces small, inconspicuous green flowers that grow closely together in long clusters. The fruits that the tree bears are small, hard nuts. A notable characteristic is the trunk of this tree, which has a calcified feel and a remarkable grey-black colour.

Care
Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' is known for its high tolerance for salt and drought and is a popular choice for marine and desert landscapes. Although the tree grows best in full sun, it can tolerate partial shade. 'Shady Lady' prefers well-draining soil and requires regular watering, but is also able to withstand longer periods of drought. While the tree is resistant to many diseases and pests, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases when overwatered.
