Stem
4FIAURS03
Origin
The Ficus religiosa, also known as the Bodhi tree, has its roots in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This special type of tree is associated with Buddhism, as Gautama Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment under such a tree. Nowadays, this tree species is cultivated worldwide, both in the tropics and in temperate climates.
Characteristics
Spectacular and recognisable are the heart-shaped leaves of the Ficus religiosa. This evergreen tree can reach a height of 30 metres, and has a wide, sprawling crown with branches that extend in all directions. The flowers of the Ficus religiosa are small, inconspicuous and green in colour, while the fruits are purple and the size and shape of small figs.
Care
Caring for the Ficus religiosa requires some patience and attention. The tree needs plenty of sunlight and thrives best in a warm and sunny spot, protected from wind and frost. Regular watering is necessary, but avoid letting the plant stand in water. A well-draining soil contributes to the health and growth of the tree. It is recommended to prune the Ficus religiosa annually in the spring to maintain a compact shape and promote growth.
