DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Pachira aquatica, also known as the water chestnut, is a tropical plant that has its origin in Central and South America. The plant thrives in wetlands and in the water-rich parts of the rainforest. Particularly in the wetlands of Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, the Pachira aquatica can be found in abundance.

Characteristics
The Pachira aquatica is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 18 meters high in the wild. The leaves of the plant are feathery and glossy, and the flowers are remarkably large and cream-coloured with long purple stamens. A distinctive detail of the Pachira aquatica are the fruits, which resemble cocoa pods that burst open to reveal a row of white, edible nuts.

Care
The Pachira aquatica thrives well in a bright environment, but does not need direct sunlight. The plant requires regular watering, but not too much as this can lead to root rot. In terms of temperature, the Pachira aquatica prefers a warm environment, meaning above 12 degrees Celsius. Periodic fertilising is recommended, to provide the plant with sufficient nutrients.
