Origin
The Platycerium bifurcatum, better known as the Elkhorn or Staghorn fern, is a type of fern that was originally only found in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Seychelles. Due to the popularity of this plant, it is now spread across the entire globe, where it is often kept as a houseplant.
Characteristics
The Platycerium bifurcatum owes its English names to the shape of its leaves, which strongly resemble the antlers of an elk or deer. The plant consists of two types of leaves, namely sterile base leaves that die off and provide protection to the roots, and fertile leaves that emerge from a central growth point. As the plant ages, more fertile leaves develop that stand out because of their unique shape.
Care
Taking care of a Platycerium bifurcatum is not complicated. The plant prefers indirect sunlight and high humidity. It is important to spray the plant regularly, but to watch out for excess water that can cause root rot. Fertilizing is ideally done in the growing season, from March until August.
