Origin
The Strelitzia nicolai originally hails from the south of Africa and is a permanent resident of coastal forests and savannas. The plant is named after the Russian tsar Nicholas I, also known as the Giant Bird of Paradise. In Europe, the plant is often used as a houseplant, whereas in warmer climates, like the Mediterranean, the plant can also be kept outside.

Characteristics
The Strelitzia nicolai is a large, fast-growing pot plant that can grow up to six meters high. The plant is characterised by its large, banana leaf-like, shiny green leaves. In addition, the plant is known for its striking flowers, which resemble the head of a bird of paradise, consisting of dark blue and white petals. However, for houseplants, these flowers often take a while to appear.

Care
The Strelitzia nicolai needs a good amount of sunlight, but direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn. Therefore, a spot with partial shade is recommended. The plant has a high water requirement, particularly in the summer, the soil can be kept slightly moist at all times. However, too wet soil should be avoided to prevent root rot. Furthermore, it is advisable to fertilise the plant every two weeks during the growing period to promote growth.
