Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, also known as Adonidia merrillii, is a species of palm tree originally from the Philippines. This tree is also known as the 'Christmas Palm' due to the bright red fruits that appear around the Christmas period.
Characteristics
Adonidia merrillii is a small to medium-sized palm tree, which can reach a height of 15 to 25 meters. The leaves are noticeably glossy, pinnate and can reach up to 2 meters in length. The trunk is slender and grey with distinctive ring-shaped leaf scars. The flowers are white and develop into bright red, round fruits that are highly decorative.
Care
Veitchia merrillii prefers a sunny location and well-drained soil. Watering should be moderate, the soil should be able to dry out slightly between watering. The palm is frost-sensitive and should be placed indoors at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. When grown outdoors, appropriate measures should be taken to protect the plant from frost damage.
