Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Convexa', also known as Japanese holly, originates from East Asia. It is a native plant of Japan and Korea, where it naturally grows in wooded areas. As this plant is well resistant to cold winters and warm summers, it is now widely cultivated and used in various gardens and parks worldwide.

Characteristics
The Ilex crenata 'Convexa' is a compact, slow-growing shrub. The plant has olive-green, glossy, small leaves which are slightly curved, hence the name 'Convexa'. The plant flowers in the spring with inconspicuous white flowers, which later in the year change into blackberry-like fruits. The height and width of this shrub is around 1 meter after about 10 years.

Care
The Ilex crenata 'Convexa' has few soil requirements and is quite hardy in winter. The plant likes a sunny to semi-shady location, but also does well in the shade. The plant prefers well-draining, nutritious soil and does not tolerate wet feet well. Pruning is possible if the shape of the plant is desired, but is not necessary for the health of the plant. For full, compact growth, the plant can be pruned back slightly in the spring.
