Origin
The Jubaea chilensis, also known as the Chilean wine palm, is a species of palm that originates from the central part of Chile. The plant grows wild along the coastal strip of the Chilean mountains and is one of the southernmost species of palm in the world. In Chile, the palm is mostly found in the forests of the Valparaiso province and in the La Campana National Park.

Characteristics
The Jubaea chilensis is characterised by its thick, grey trunk and its large, feathered, bluish-green leaves. This species of palm can reach a height of up to 25 meters. The plant's flowers are yellow and the fruits, which bear a strong resemblance to mini coconuts, are orange to brown in colour. The palm can be up to 60 years old before it flowers for the first time.

Care
The care for the Jubaea chilensis can be challenging, as the plant has high demands of its surroundings. The palm prefers a full-sun location and well-draining soil. Though the plant is drought-tolerant, it requires regular watering in dry periods to stimulate growth. It's recommended to protect the palm from severe frost in order to preserve its health and vitality. Over-fertilisation should be avoided as this can lead to salt build-up in the soil, which can be harmful to the plant.
