DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Phyllostachys bissetii, also known as dark green bamboo, originates from the Sichuan province in China. This fast-growing bamboo is part of the Poaceae grass family. Naturally, this species grows in temperate regions in the east of China. Despite its Asian origin, the Phyllostachys bissetii has managed to spread across the world, mainly through garden centres.

Characteristics
The Phyllostachys bissetii is an evergreen bamboo with an upright growth habit. The stems, or culms, can reach a height of up to six meters. The green culms and the dark green foliage make the plant a striking feature. The stems have a strong hardness making them practical for furniture making. Additionally, the Phyllostachys bissetii has a fast growth rate which betrays the category it is classified in, the running bamboos.

Care
For optimal growth, the Phyllostachys bissetii requires a well-draining and fertile soil. It is advised to plant a root barrier around the bamboo to prevent invasive growth. This bamboo species thrives well in both full sunlight and partial shade and requires an average amount of water. To keep the plant healthy, it is important to regularly remove dead stems so as not to use up nutrients unnecessarily. Regarding frost resistance, the Phyllostachys bissetii is quite strong and can withstand temperatures down to -20°C.
