Euphorbia tirucalli
Bush
4EUTIKK21
Origin
The Euphorbia abyssinica is indigenous to the highlands of East Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Sudan. The plant mainly exists in rugged, rocky environments where few other plants can survive. Despite the extreme conditions in which the Euphorbia abyssinica grows, this species has been very successful in adapting and spreading.
Characteristics
The Euphorbia abyssinica is a succulent species that can grow up to six metres high. The plant has a unique green to grey-green trunk with longitudinal ribs, which are covered with small thorns. The leaves are small and often fall off as the plant matures. The Euphorbia abyssinica produces small yellow flowers, but is especially known for its impressive sculptural appearance.
Care
Although the Euphorbia abyssinica has adapted to dry and rocky conditions, the plant can also be cultivated in temperate climates. It requires well-drained soil and a location where it receives full sunlight. Overwatering should be avoided, as the plant has a high tolerance for drought and is susceptible to root rot. During the winter months, the plant needs to be protected against low temperatures, as this species is not frost-resistant.
