Origin
The Hedera hibernica, also known as the Irish ivy, is native to Western Europe, but is now cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant. Originally, this species grew in Ireland and the United Kingdom, but it can also occur in other temperate climates in Europe and America.

Characteristics
The Hedera hibernica is a winter-hardy, perennial plant that is characterised by its strong growth and sturdy holdfast roots which allow it to cling to almost any surface. The leaves are dark green, shiny, leather-like, and have a triangular to round shape. This ivy produces small, yellow-green flowers in the autumn that attract bees and other insects, followed by blue-black berries in the winter.

Care
For optimal growth, the Hedera hibernica requires a fertile, well-draining soil and a spot in the partial shade or shade, although it can also tolerate sun. In terms of watering, it is important that the soil does not dry out, especially in the summer. It is also advisable to fertilise the plant annually to maintain the nutrients in the soil. The plant is reasonably frost-hardy, but it is recommended to protect the plant against hard frost during the winter.
