Origin
The Bucida buceras, better known as the 'Shady Lady', has its origin in the tropical and subtropical areas of Central and South America and the Caribbean. This tree is particularly commonly found in Mexico and Florida. In the wild, the 'Shady Lady' primarily grows along the coast, on salty grounds and in marshland.

Characteristics
The 'Shady Lady' is an evergreen tree that can grow to a height of 8 to 12 metres. The tree is characterised by its wide, dense crown and dark green, shiny leaves. In the summer, the tree produces small, yellow flowers which are followed by small, inconspicuous fruits. Its trunk and branches are generally covered with spiky thorns which are a distinctive feature of this species.

Care
As the 'Shady Lady' naturally grows in salty, dry soil, it requires little maintenance. Full sun exposure and well-draining soil are essential for the tree's health. Overwatering can cause root rot, hence watering should be done in moderation. Trimming may be necessary to maintain the shape and size of the crown, especially in urban or smaller garden settings.
