Origin
The Pachycereus 'Pecten Aboriginum', also known as the Hairbrush Cactus, is native to Mexico and the southern United States. The plant predominantly grows in the Sonora and Mojave deserts, but can also be found in the mountains of Chihuahua. This cactus is adapted to life in dry, rocky environments.
Characteristics
Pachycereus 'Pecten-Aboriginum' is an evergreen cactus that grows upright and can reach up to twelve meters in height. The plant has a flattened to cylindrical trunk covered with ribs coated in clusters of thorns, which help to protect against herbivores. The flowers of this cactus are white and bloom from late in the evening to early in the morning. Notable are the fruits which are bright red and have a sweet, melon-like pulp.
Care
The Pachycereus 'Pecten-Aboriginum' requires full sun and thrives well in dry, well-drained soil. Although it is drought-tolerant, it needs regular watering during the growing period, but less in the winter. It is important that the plant is protected from frost, as although it can withstand some cold, it is not frost-hardy.
