Ficus rubiginosa 'Australis'
Stem
4FIAURS04
Origin
The Ficus benghalensis, better known as the Indian Banyan tree, originates from India and the surrounding regions of Pakistan and Bangladesh. In its native environment, it is known for taking up large amounts of space with its complex network of branches and roots.
Characteristics
Distinctive features of the Ficus benghalensis are its sprawling branches and extensive root system that can spread over a wide area both above and below ground. The tree produces striking prop-roots that hang from the air and eventually anchor into the ground, this supports the tree and allows for collection of nutrients over a larger area. The tree is evergreen and has glossy, broad leaves that grow abundantly. It also bears fruit, but these are small and rarely eaten by humans.
Care
Caring for a Ficus benghalensis requires a certain level of understanding of the plant. Although it withstands a range of environmental temperatures, it prefers a warm, humid climate characteristic of its original growth areas. It also requires sufficient water, but is sensitive to over-watering, so it is important that it has well-drained soil. The tree needs direct sunlight, but can also adapt to lighter shadow. Pruning can be carried out to control the size and maintain the shape.
