Origin
The Washingtonia filifera, also known as the California fan palm, has its origin in the southwest of America. This type of palm thrives well in the desert climate and along water streams in the United States, particularly in Arizona, Nevada and especially South California.

Characteristics
The Washingtonia filifera is a robust fan palm that can grow up to 20 metres high. The fan-shaped leaves that can become up to 1.5 metres wide and the trunk covered with dead leaves at the bottom are characteristic of the palm. The palm produces small, white flowers and round, black fruits. The Washingtonia filifera can handle drought well and is resistant to frost down to about -10°C.

Care
The Washingtonia filifera requires sufficient sun and warmth to grow well. In terms of soil constitution, the palm prefers well-drained soil. Generally, the palm needs little water, but during long, dry periods, it may be necessary to provide extra water. Pruning may be necessary to remove the dead leaves and stimulate the growth of the palm. However, avoid too much pruning as this can weaken the palm.
