Origin
The Aspidistra elatior, also known as the 'Cast Iron Plant', originates from the forests of Japan and Taiwan. The plant was brought to Europe by English explorers in the 19th century. Due to its shade-loving nature, the plant quickly gained popularity and became a common houseplant during the Victorian era.

Characteristics
The Aspidistra elatior is distinguished by its dark green, glossy leaves that appear to come directly from the ground. The plant grows slowly and can eventually reach a height of approximately 60-80 cm. The flowering of the Aspidistra is quite special. The flowers hide themselves on the ground edge and are dark purple in colour. Unique is that the Aspidistra elatior thrives very well in low light, a characteristic not many houseplants have.

Care
In terms of care, the Aspidistra elatior is an extremely simple plant. It is considered particularly sturdy, as it does well in both cool and warmer temperatures. However, overwatering should be avoided, as the plant is sensitive to rot. Furthermore, the plant needs little light and does well in the shade. Thanks to these characteristics, the Aspidistra elatior is a perfect plant for people who don't have a particularly green thumb.
