Origin
The Fatsia Spider Web, also known as the Aralia japonica 'Spider Web', is a striking evergreen shrub that originates from East Asia. This exotic plant is native to Japan, Korea and Taiwan, where it grows in forested areas, mainly in the mountains. The plant was first introduced into Western cultures in the mid-twentieth century.
Characteristics
The Fatsia Spider Web is easy to recognise thanks to its large, bright green leaves with a distinct white web-like pattern, hence the name 'Spider Web'. This palm-like shrub can reach a height of up to 3 metres with broad, lobed leaves of up to 45 centimetres in diameter. In the late autumn or early winter, the plant adorns itself with small, cream-white flowers that come together in spherical clusters.
Care
For optimal growth, the Fatsia Spider Web needs a location with partial shade or filtered light. The plant is well resistant to cold, but requires protection against harsh winds and severe frost. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and requires regular water, especially during dry periods. When fertilising the plant, it is advisable to use a slow-release fertiliser during the growing season.
