The Croton (Codiaeum) variegatum 'Banana' is an exotic plant originally hailing from Southeast Asia and the West Pacific. This specimen, with the band name 'Banana', is part of the Euphorbiaceae family, known for their diversity in leaf shapes and colours.
Characteristics
Codiaeum variegatum 'Banana' sets itself apart with its leaves that sport a unique banana shape. They're characterised by a mix of green, yellow, and red hues, depending on the maturity of the leaf. This plant generally grows slowly, ranging in size from small plants of about 30cm high to bigger bushes stretching up to 3m. The 'Banana' variety rarely produces flowers, instead being renowned in the houseplant world for its appealing, variegated leaves.
Care
Croton variegatum 'Banana' has a particular need for warmth and humidity; hence, position it preferably in full sun or partial shade with high humidity, and avoid drafts. Water it ideally when the top layer of the soil feels dry, ensuring careful drainage to prevent root rot. To support growth, it's ideal to apply liquid plant food monthly from spring through to autumn.
