Origin
The Olea europaea, better known as the olive tree, originates from the Mediterranean region. The tree is an important symbol of peace, wisdom and victory in various cultures and myths. Fossil remains suggest that olives have been growing in this area from 20,000 to 40,000 years ago.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 10 metres high, with a broad crown and a gnarled trunk. The leaves are lance-shaped and greyish-green, while the flowers are white and small. The fruits, the olives, vary in colour from green to dark brown, depending on their maturity.

Care
The olive tree needs a sunny and sheltered location. It can tolerate drought and high temperatures well, a trait it developed in its original Mediterranean environment. It is important to ensure good drainage because standing water in the root zone can cause root rot. This tree also needs a moderate amount of nutrients and a pruning session every two years to maintain its shape and promote fruit production.
