Acca sellowiana (210-250)
Stem
5ACSERS25
Origin
The Citrus pompelmo 'Grapefruit' originally comes from Barbados, where it arose as a natural cross between the sweet orange and grapefruit in the 18th century. The species was further developed and introduced to Europe and the United States, where it became popular for its sweet and sour flavour and nutritional properties.
Characteristics
The Citrus pompelmo 'Grapefruit' is a large, evergreen tree that can reach up to 20 metres in height. The leaves are glossy, green and oval in shape. The tree bears large, fragrant flowers that can reach up to 5 cm in diameter, followed by juicy citrus fruit. The fruit is large, round and has a thin but tough, smooth peel that can range from yellow to pink-red.
Care
Grapefruit trees prefer a sunny, sheltered spot and require well-drained soil. They need to be regularly watered, especially during the dry summer months, but they do not like being waterlogged. In winter, they should be kept in a cool, frost-free location. The citrus tree should be fed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser in spring to stimulate growth and fruit development. Regular pruning may be needed to maintain shape and limit excess growth.
