Origin
The Armeria maritima, also known as the sea thrift or sea pink, is a perennial plant that originally comes from the coastal areas of the northern hemisphere, from Europe to North America. They mainly grow on rocky and salty soils, making them perfectly adapted to coastal climates.
Characteristics
Characteristic of the Armeria maritima are the pink to white flowers that appear from late spring to early summer. The plant forms a low-growing, compact shrub with grass-like leaves, that grows in a clump. The small flowers appear on long, upright stems above the leaves.
Care
The Armeria maritima is a low maintenance plant that prefers well-drained soil and full sun. The plant is highly resistant to drought and high salt concentrations, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens and coastal gardens. Although the sea thrift is a robust plant, you can improve its lifespan by regularly removing faded flowers and pruning the plant once a year in early spring.
