Origin
The Agave americana 'Variegata' is a type of succulent that naturally originates from the desert climate of Mexico, Central America, and the southern United States. The plant has also been referred to as the American agave or century plant, despite being brought to Europe centuries ago by explorers.
Characteristics
The Agave americana 'Variegata' is characterised by its large, spatula-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette. The leaves have a blue-green colour, are thick and fleshy, and fringed with a yellow to white edge. The plant can grow to a height of two metres and also produces a large inflorescence that can reach up to four metres. However, the most notable feature of this plant is the exceptionally long bloom, which appears only once in the life of the plant, typically after 10 to 30 years.
Care
Despite its tropical origin, the Agave americana 'Variegata' is a spectacularly easy plant to care for. It requires well-draining soil, a warm location and can withstand dry conditions. The plant requires very little water but does need ample sunlight. Since it is not completely winter-hardy, it is advisable to protect this plant against frost in the winter, or bring it indoors if possible.
