Origin
Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan Gold', also known as the Golden Leylandii, is a fast-growing evergreen conifer originally from Wales in the United Kingdom. This plant was discovered on the Leighton Hall estate in Welshpool in the 1880s. The breeding towards the gold-coloured variant took place later.

Characteristics
The 'Castlewellan Gold' is characterised by its dense shape and its golden to yellow-green needles that provide colour to the garden all year round. This conifer can reach a height of 180 to 200 centimeters, making it a popular choice for hedges and windbreakers. What's special about this species is that the colour becomes more intense as the tree gets more sun.

Care
Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan Gold' has few demands on the soil, as long as it is well-drained. Plant the conifer preferably in the full sun or partial shade. Prune the hedge in the summer and late winter to maintain the shape and promote denseness. The plant can withstand drought well but struggles with wet, acidic or poorly drained soils. Despite the plant being a fast grower, it is important to know that repeated heavy pruning can damage the plant.
