Origin
The Mammillaria painterii, also known as the Whitefur Nipple Cactus, originates from Mexico. The plant mainly grows in the western parts of the country, such as Sinaloa and Jalisco. This type of cactus often grows in the wild on rocky slopes in subtropical climates. In Mexico, the plant is highly valued by the native population for its aesthetic value.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria painterii is a spherical to cylindrical cactus that can grow up to 20 cm tall and 6 cm in diameter in the wild. The stem is covered with closely spaced 'nipple-like' tubercles, carrying white woolly fibres and an array of spines. The flowers of this type of cactus are typically vivid pink to purple-red, and grow around the crown of the plant. They have a diameter of about 2 centimetres.
Care
In terms of care, the Mammillaria painterii needs a lot of direct sunlight and well-draining soil. The plant is drought tolerant and can be grown both indoors and outdoors. During the growth period, the Mammillaria painterii needs regular watering, but the soil must completely dry out between watering to prevent root rot. During the winter period, the watering should be significantly reduced.
