Origin
The Mammillaria spinosissima, also known as the Red Head Cactus, is a cactus species that originally comes from Mexico. It is especially popular in the regions of Oaxaca and Puebla, where it grows at altitudes between 1300 and 2400 metres.
Characteristics
The Mammillaria spinosissima distinguishes itself through its reddish-brown, long and curled thorns. The plant itself is cylindrical, grows slowly and can reach up to 30 centimetres in height. It is a flowering plant that produces small, magenta-coloured flowers between late spring and early summer. This cactus also bears small, bright red fruits after flowering.
Care
The care of the Mammillaria spinosissima requires a lot of light, but direct sunlight should be avoided if possible to prevent discolouration or burning. Moderate watering is sufficient, although this should be reduced in the winter months. The plant is relatively disease-resistant, but can suffer damage from excessive water or extremely low temperatures. The best results are achieved at temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius.
