Origin
The Acer palmatum dissectum 'Garnet' is a variety of the Japanese maple and originally comes from East Asia. It is a popular species in landscape architecture and garden design, especially in areas with a temperate climate. This species was first introduced in the west in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Acer pal. diss. 'Garnet' is characterised by its striking, deep red leaf colour. The leaf is fine and delicately cut, giving an elegant appearance. In the autumn, the leaf changes colour to a beautiful orange-red shade. The 'Garnet' remains relatively small compared to other maple species and usually reaches a height of 2 to 3 metres with a similar spread.
Care
The Acer pal. diss. 'Garnet' requires moderate care. It thrives well in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. The plant has a preference for slightly acidic soil, but can also survive in neutral or slightly alkaline conditions. Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and size of the tree, but isn't absolutely necessary given its slow growth rate.
