Origin
The Cleistocactus strausii, also known as the silver torch, is originally from the highlands of Argentina and Bolivia. This plant is a member of the cactus family and is mainly found in mountainous and dry areas. Its growth is flexible and it can adapt well to different soil and climate conditions.
Characteristics
The Cleistocactus strausii is an elongated, columnar cactus that can grow up to three meters high. The plant is covered with silvery hairs that shimmer in the sun, hence the nickname silver torch. The cactus produces tubular, scarlet-red flowers that only partially open and typically appear at the ends of the cactus.
Care
The Cleistocactus strausii does not have many care requirements. Although the plant is drought-tolerant, moderate watering in the spring and summer is desirable to prevent the cactus from drying out. The plant likes bright, indirect light and needs well-drained soil to prevent root rot. In the winter, watering can be reduced, while the plant is frost-resistant at temperatures down to -5 degrees Celsius.
