Origin
The Opuntia tuna, is commonly referred to as the prickly pear cactus. This species of cactus is naturally found in the Mediterranean, however today it can be seen worldwide in warm, dry landscapes. This cactus belongs to the Opuntia family, known for its distinctive paddle-shaped segments.

Characteristics

The Opuntia tuna has the typical disk-shaped, flat segments characteristic of Opuntia species, which look like broad, flat leaves but are actually stem segments. It also has long, sharp spines that can firmly stick to the skin. This cactus produces flowers that range from yellow to red, depending on the subspecies and conditions. It also bears edible fruits, known as 'tuna.'

Care
This species of cactus is drought-tolerant and is often used in gardens in arid environments. It prefers a sunny position and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. For optimal growth, it can be fertilised twice a year, once at the beginning of the growing season and once halfway through. Although it can withstand various types of pests, the Opuntia tuna may be susceptible to cochineal insects.
