Origin
The Araucaria heterophylla, better known as the Norfolk Island pine, is a tree that was originally only found on the small Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean, located between Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. The island has a subtropical climate, which has contributed to the growth and development of the tree.

Characteristics
A distinguishing feature of the Araucaria heterophylla is the striking branches which in mature trees form a so-called 'tiered arrangement'. The needles on the branch are soft and roughly one centimetre long. Young specimens have a pyramid shape, but over time the tree takes on a more layered form with a dense crown of diverse leaves. The tree's seeds are edible and are used as a food source by the indigenous population of Norfolk Island.

Care
Even though the Araucaria heterophylla is nowadays kept as a houseplant all around the world, the plant requires specific conditions in order to grow. The plant needs plenty of light, but does not tolerate direct sunlight. It also prefers a constant, moderate temperature as it cannot stand significant temperature changes. Good drainage is important, as the tree's roots must not sit in water. With good care, the plant can grow into a large and healthy tree.
